Discovery Bank Mobile Application

Discovery Health, a well-known health insurance provider in South Africa, wanted to expand its business into banking with a new product called Discovery Bank.

I was brought onto the project as the lead designer to create a unique brand identity and user experience that would leverage the reputation of Discovery Health and appeal to a broad audience. Research was conducted to understand user needs and preferences, as well as existing banking apps and products.

Project Breakdown

  • To create a distinctive brand identity, a brand UI system was developed, which included a colour palette, typography, and monoline icon system. A vertical bank card was designed to complement the unique product offering, distinguishing it from other banks. A landing page was created to provide existing customers with early access to the product, and an MVP of the bank app was developed to test the user interface and experience.

  • The brand UI system was refined through user testing, with an emphasis on simplicity and clarity. The vertical bank card design was tested with focus groups, resulting in positive feedback and a decision to make it a unique selling point. The MVP bank app was developed using the design thinking process, with feedback from users and stakeholders incorporated at each stage. The landing page was designed to be user-friendly and engaging, with a clear call-to-action, prompting people to sign up.

  • The brand UI system and vertical bank card design were implemented across all touchpoints, including the bank app and marketing materials. The MVP bank app was tested with existing Discovery Health customers, who found the interface intuitive and easy to use. The landing page was tested with a small group of users, and feedback was incorporated to enhance the user experience.

  • The product launch was a success, with positive feedback from customers and industry experts. The brand UI system and vertical bank card design received praise for their simplicity and uniqueness, becoming key differentiators for the bank. The MVP bank app was well-received, with users citing its ease of use and user-friendly design.

  • The Discovery Bank project was a successful example of the design thinking process in action. By conducting research, ideating and prototyping, designing and developing, and implementing and testing, a unique and user-friendly brand identity and product were created. The vertical bank card, MVP bank app, and landing page all contributed to the success of the product launch. Key takeaways from the project include the importance of user feedback and simplicity in design.

Onboarding

The onboarding process consists of three screens that provide users with an introduction to the app's features and benefits, more detailed information on how it works, and special promotions or offers available to new users. The screens are designed to be visually appealing and easy to understand, with concise text and engaging visuals or animations. Overall, the process aims to showcase the benefits of Discovery Bank and encourage users to sign up and start using the app.

Signup

The signup flow is a hassle-free process for new and existing users. Existing users can sign in to their accounts using their email address and password on the Sign In Page. New users can create an account by providing their personal information on the Sign Up Page. If a user forgets their password, they can reset it by entering their email address or phone number on the Forgot Password screen. Once they submit their request, the Check Email screen confirms that a password reset email has been sent. They can then reset their password on the Reset Password screen. The Create Password screen allows new users to create a password to secure their account. Finally, the Verified Page confirms that the user's account is verified.

Home and Transactions

The home screen and transaction flow of the Discovery Bank app provide users with an intuitive and easy-to-navigate way of managing their finances. The Home Page displays the account balance and recent transactions, while the Money Transfer screen offers an overview of transfer options. Users can send money using the Send Money screen, confirm transaction details with the Transfer Details screen, and track account activity with the All Transactions screen. The Profile and Statistics screens allow users to view and edit their account information and track their spending habits. Finally, the Transfer Success screen confirms the completion of a transfer and summarizes the transaction details. Together, these screens make it simple and convenient for users to stay on top of their finances.
